Time as the space between grains: a real metaphor.
When we observe an hourglass, we think of time "flowing." But if we shift our gaze from the flow to the structure, we notice something deeper: between one grain and the next, there is always an empty space. A space that contains nothing, but which separates and defines the rhythm. In this chapter, we propose a metaphor: time is not a river, but a cosmic hourglass in which reality jumps from one grain to another, separated by micro-spaces of non-existence. These are the Oblivion Time (${\Theta}$).
Imagine an extreme slow-motion of an hourglass. A grain falls, then another. Neither is attached to the previous one. The flow is an illusion. Now, imagine that each grain is an instantaneous present: a frame in which everything is real, motionless. And that between one grain and the next there is nothing: no information, no matter, no time. Only ${\Theta}$. A cosmic click, an absolute pause between two existences.
L’illusione della continuitàThe illusion of continuity
Nessuna causa, nessun effetto, nessun divenire. Solo la possibilità del prossimo istante. The human brain reconstructs reality by interpolating discrete instants. It is the one that "draws" the continuous flow. But if we could see reality as it is, we would realize that everything happens in clicks, jumps, sequences. Just like in the hourglass, physical time also manifests in frames separated by an invisible instant: ${\Theta}$. And in that invisible space, there is nothing. No cause, no effect, no becoming. Only the possibility of the next instant.
Clessidra e coscienzaHourglass and consciousness
There is also an inner dimension to this metaphor. Attention, memory, thought do not flow: they are activated in jumps. The memory of a moment is never continuous: it is a grain that falls. Consciousness itself is probably a rhythmic mechanism, which exists in the present, turns off, and then reactivates. Yet it seems to us that we are always present, always on. The truth is that the illusion of continuity is what holds identity together, just as the illusion of fluid time holds the universe together.
