Time does not flow. Time moves in bursts, like a beating heart or a drum setting the rhythm of an invisible dance. This intuition, however counterintuitive to daily experience, is perhaps one of the most profound revolutions in modern thought: time is not a fluid, but a rhythmic grid.
Each instant of reality is not connected to the previous one by a continuous current, but is separated by a void. A microscopic, imperceptible, yet essential void. That void is the Oblivion Time. It breaks reality into frames, and what we perceive as continuity is merely a reconstructed illusion.
Il salto come fondamento della realtàThe jump as the foundation of reality
This discontinuity of time is not a limitation of our observation: it is a fundamental property of the universe. The jump from one instant to the next is the mechanism through which change occurs. Every transformation, every motion, every thought, is the consequence of a sequence of instants separated by nothing. Time, therefore, does not unite: it interrupts. But it is precisely this interruption that allows for variation. A world of continuous time would be motionless, static, devoid of distinguishable events. Only the alternation between "is" and "is not," between instant and oblivion, creates the dramatic structure of reality.
And yet, there is something that links these frames. Something that crosses them, connects them, interprets them: thought. The human mind is a builder of bridges between instants. Where time jumps, consciousness imagines movement. Where there is a fracture, perception stitches it up. Where the present is one and then another, thought creates the narrative. We can therefore state that reality is discontinuous, but thought is fluid. Our sense of time arises from the interpretative act of consciousness, which flows where reality jumps. In other words: time jumps, but thought connects.
La mente come compensazione del tempo a scattiThe mind as compensation for staccato time
The perception of continuous time is a necessary illusion. It is an evolutionary function of consciousness, which reassembles the voids between instants into a coherent experience. But when we observe carefully – in meditation, in crisis, in ecstasy – we can feel the silent "click" of reality changing. We can grasp the staccato nature of the world. The real time is not that which flows like a river. The real time is a succession of separate echoes, which we transform into a symphony.
