Frequenza di osservazione e tempo di oblivion umano Observation frequency and human oblivion time

To understand how our perception of time is linked to brain physiology, we propose a formula that describes the human brain's observation frequency. The frequency at which a brain can observe and "record" instantaneous presents is what determines its oblivion time.

Formula fondamentaleFundamental formula

$f_{obs} = k \cdot \frac{P_{brain}}{m_{brain}}$
  • $f_{obs}$ è la frequenza di osservazione (in Hertz).$f_{obs}$ is the observation frequency (in Hertz).
  • $k$ è una costante di proporzionalità (da determinare sperimentalmente).$k$ is a proportionality constant (to be determined experimentally).
  • $P_{brain}$ è la potenza di calcolo effettiva del cervello (in Watt).$P_{brain}$ is the effective computational power of the brain (in Watts).
  • $m_{brain}$ è la massa del cervello (in kg).$m_{brain}$ is the mass of the brain (in kg).

This formula stems from the idea that the more brainpower available per unit of mass, the higher the frequency at which external events can be sampled. In other words, a more "energy-dense" brain processes data faster and observes a greater number of instants per second.

Tempo di oblivion umanoHuman oblivion time

Essendo la frequenza l’inverso del tempo di campionamento, si ottiene: Since frequency is the inverse of sampling time, we get:

$\Theta_{umano} = \frac{1}{f_{obs}}$

Per esempio, se $f_{obs} = 100$ Hz, allora: The human Oblivion Time is therefore directly derivable from brain physiology. For example, if $f_{obs} = 100$ Hz, then:

$$ \Theta_{umano} = \frac{1}{100} = 0.01 \text{ s} \quad (10 \text{ millisecondi}) $$

Anything that happens in less than 10 milliseconds is not perceived as a distinct event, but is compressed or ignored in our conscious experience.

Nota sulla costante kNote on the constant k

The constant $k$ represents factors such as synaptic efficiency, neuronal distribution, and the coherence of brain waves. It can vary between individuals, ages, species, states of consciousness, or pathologies. An initial estimate can be made by assuming $k=1$ for an average human brain in a state of alert wakefulness.
