Percepire è ricostruire: lo scotoma temporale To perceive is to reconstruct: the temporal scotoma

The perception of time, however objective and linear it may seem, is actually an act of conscious reconstruction. Our brain does not record time like a camera, but samples, interprets, and connects, like a film editor selecting and splicing scenes.

In the midst of these instants, between one present and the next, there is a gap, a blind spot. This space—which in the Oblivion Time Theory we call Oblivion Time—is a temporal scotoma: a moment that exists but is not perceived. It is invisible to consciousness, yet essential to the structure of reality.

In neurology, a scotoma is a "blind spot" in the visual field, an area that the eye does not see but that the brain "fills in" with surrounding information. Similarly, there are scotomas in the perception of time: gaps that the brain does not register but fills with apparent continuity. This is one of the most subtle secrets of perception: we do not see the world as it is, but as our brain interprets and completes it. If between two frames of reality there exists an interval of nothingness, the brain invents what lies in between. This is why we believe that time flows. Because our brain abhors a vacuum. And so it fills it.

Percepire è creare una narrazioneTo perceive is to create a narrative

Every perceived instant is a coherent invention. Reality happens in snapshots, but our mind connects them into a fluid narrative. Like a reader flipping through a book too quickly to notice the pauses between words, consciousness builds its continuity from a disjointed universe. In this sense, to perceive is a creative act. We do not see what is there, but what we manage to piece together between one click and the next. The perception of time is therefore a cognitive strategy, an intelligent reconstruction that hides the true discontinuous structure of the universe.

L’inganno del presente fluidoThe deceit of the fluid present

The present, as we experience it, is not a point but a bridge. A bridge built over an abyss of silence. This "silence" is the temporal scotoma, the space in which the world momentarily turns off. And in that space, anything is possible: because there, nothing exists, not even time itself. The time we experience is the result of an adaptive reconstruction, necessary for survival, communication, and action. But it is an illusion. A useful lie. And yet, in moments of extreme presence – in meditation, in pain, in wonder – we can glimpse it: that jump, that void between two beats of the world. In that void, perhaps, lies the true face of the universe.
